BYOD
What is BYOD and why is it important to my school?
BYOD or bring your own device is a method of removing the financial burden of schools purchasing end user devices (computers). With the increasing cost of computing in schools something has to change this method of allowing devices to be purchased by parents is one of the options currently available. We have devised a cost effective solution to assist schools with the process. There are several putfalls if the process is not performed correctly, please read this lealet and if you have any questions please call Norrcom today.
STAGE 1 - Decide on a device
The device is important, it forms the bedrock of the BYOD program in your school, do you go down the path o a single device keeping management easy, do you suggest one of three.
What is needed is a directive from the school with these suggestions requesting parental participation. School should not ask parents to send in devices that are old devices that may or may not work, there has to be a level of control.
Once decided school needs to proceed with either a class by class, year by yearor all of school approach.
Allow $400 upwards for a netbook to $800 for an Ipad.
STAGE 2 - How do parents purchase
We have discussed this with several schools, should the school become the reseller? Should the school have preffered suppliers or should parents go directly to the vendor of their choice. We opted for the second with Norrcom taking orders on the schools behalf, this way we can factor in items such as antivirus, joining domain so the cost to the parent is the final cost. We are now left with the question of lease or purchase. If you call Norrcom we can discuss the complexities of this complex topic.
STAGE 3 - Control and Usage
A key part of allowing BYOD are the devices allowed into school and how school will control the usage of these devices. How will antivirus work, how will the internet be controlled, how do schools manage the aspects o BYOD without breaking the bank.
Before the devices are allowed into school school with its ICT provider and ICT lead teachers need to know what the devices will be used for. Are they purely search tools on the internet? Will they be allowed to print? Are they for accessing LMS?
Norrcom have worked on all of these solutions, call us now to work through the complexities.
STAGE 4 - Infrastructure
School has now reached the point that allows BYOD, time needs to be spent on ensuring the systems within school work and work well, teachers cannot be fixing devices, it ditracts from the purpose. A work group needs to work through the complexities of how the internal infrastructure will cope.
Wifi If there enough and will it be fast enough
Internet Again what is the speed like
Internal authentication Will the provisioning internally be able to cope
